Your things are your business.
Catanook is built so we never see what you catalogue. This policy explains, in plain words, what happens to your data. Last updated 15 October 2026.
- You don't create an account with us, and we have no servers that store your data.
- Your catalogue lives on your devices and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud storage.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party SDKs that collect data.
- When you look up a barcode or title, only that code or text is sent to the catalogue services listed below.
- You can export everything, free, at any time, and delete anything.
Who we are
Catanook is made by Haupt Mercantile Group (“we”, “us”). If you have any question about privacy, you can reach us through our Support page, where a contact form is coming soon.
What we collect
Nothing. We don't collect, store or have access to your name, email address, items, photos, locations or any other information you put into Catanook. We don't use analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services, and the app contains no tracking of any kind.
If you choose to share crash reports and app analytics with developers in your device's settings, Apple may share anonymous diagnostic data with us under Apple's own privacy policy. We use it only to fix bugs.
Where your data is kept
On your device
Everything you add — items, places, lists, photos, notes and settings — is stored in the app's private storage on your iPhone or iPad.
In your iCloud
If you're signed in to iCloud, Catanook keeps your profiles in sync across your devices using Apple's CloudKit, in your own private iCloud database. We cannot see or access it. Notes, serial numbers, prices, vendors, links, your custom fields and photo locations are stored with CloudKit's end-to-end encryption. Data in iCloud is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
Photos are synced at two smaller sizes for viewing; the full-size original stays on the device where it was taken.
When you share a profile
If you share a profile, the people you invite through Apple's sharing sheet can see (and, if you allow it, change) the items in that profile. Only that profile is shared. You can stop sharing, or remove people, at any time. If someone shares a profile with you and later stops, it's removed from your device.
Services Catanook contacts
To fill in details when you scan a barcode, type a code or search for a title, Catanook sends only that code or search text to the catalogue services below, directly from your device. Requests carry the app's name, and like any internet request, the service sees your device's IP address. No account details, item lists or photos are ever sent.
| Service | Used for | Their policy |
|---|---|---|
| Open Library (Internet Archive) | Book details and covers | archive.org |
| Google Books | Book details | |
| UPCitemdb | Product details from barcodes | upcitemdb.com |
| MusicBrainz and Cover Art Archive | Music releases and artwork | metabrainz.org |
| Scryfall | Magic: The Gathering cards | scryfall.com |
| Pokémon TCG API | Pokémon trading cards | pokemontcg.io |
You can always add things by hand instead; nothing is looked up unless you scan, type or search.
Camera, photos and location
- Camera: used to scan barcodes and take photos of your things, only while you're doing so. Recognising what's in a photo happens entirely on your device.
- Photos: Catanook only sees the photos you pick.
- Location: Catanook doesn't track your location. If a photo you add already contains a location (as camera photos often do), it's kept with the photo, which helps as evidence for an insurance claim. You can see it in the photo viewer.
Siri, Spotlight and Apple Intelligence
If you allow it, Catanook makes your items searchable in Spotlight and available to Siri and Shortcuts. This index stays on your device and is managed by iOS. You can hide a whole profile, a list or a single item from Siri and Search in the app's settings.
Face ID
If you turn on the app lock, iOS checks your Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. Catanook never receives biometric data, only whether the check succeeded.
Your choices and rights
- Export: Settings › Export gives you a spreadsheet per profile, or everything including photos as a ZIP. Free, always.
- Delete: deleting something moves it to Recently Deleted for 30 days, then it's removed from all your devices. You can also delete it for good straight away.
- iCloud: you can delete Catanook's data from iCloud in your device's Settings › [your name] › iCloud. Catanook then keeps your data on the device and asks before uploading it again.
- Everything: deleting the app removes the data stored on that device.
Because we don't hold your personal data, there's nothing for us to access, correct or delete on our side. Still, if you have any question or request under data-protection law (such as the GDPR or CCPA), we're happy to help; contact us through the Support page.
Children
Catanook is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the way Catanook handles data changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change ships. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
